About three years ago, as many of you will know, I packed up a random jumble of clothes, backwoods cooking equipment and not enough soap to see me through the horrors of France, and set off for a trip round the eastern edge of Europe’s most hexagonal-shaped country, visiting the tiny states of Liechtenstein, Monaco and Andorra along the way, before scything up through the middle, over the Millau Viaduct, then on to St. Malo to get a boat to the Channel Islands. My last quest, back in Britain, was to visit several cider farms several cider farms to sample their wares. I wrote about it once or twice, and even (eventually) posted some photos and videos. The epic wanderlust has stuck again… but I’m on a tighter budget, so I’m going to tackle those bits of unfinished business I’ve got in Cornwall, and should be setting off very soon…
…that was the original plan, anyway. The sudden and shocking death of Richard Garner over the weekend has thrown all that into chaos. My wandering can wait if there’s a funeral of a very good friend to be attended, and let’s not forget Rich was an avid listener of this show, and he’d submitted several requests recently, which few people ever do. He made one for this show, which I included after I had to rework the show very heavily at the last minute. I’ve also bolted on a few tracks right at the beginning that I know he’d appreciate. This show, and those in the future, are dedicated to his memory.
Rich’s last request, as it would turn out, was for the feature I’ve been promising for so long, on the welding together of metal and classical music. With a bit of help, I’ve compiled the classical metal feature that I would say does total justice to both worlds. And there’s 43 minutes of it to chew on, which has also managed to take over Shut It! for this month.
And as if there needed to be any more evidence that I now prefer podcasting to DJing, and I can get away with absolutely anything on this show, four of the tracks on this show run into double figures. It’s the way it should be.
